About: Lynn McCarthy

I grew up in the Washington DC area. Large family, small house decorated leanly, but always with good quality pieces & clean contemporary lines. I was drawn at a young age to the artifacts my father brought back from frequent work trips across the globe. Ostrich eggs from Australia, horns from Africa, delicately painted Asian horse-hair bowls, Japanese carved cork under glass, exotic jewel-toned butterflies from Brazil. They created lovely accents adding color & texture but they also told a story which enhanced the spaces they occupied.

My passion for design started in grade school - crafting custom homes for dolls & trolls out of shoe boxes and scraps from mother’s sewing basket. A boundless energy to create, whether in design, crafts or the kitchen, has been the defining factor of my entire life.

Having been lucky enough to study & travel in Europe I soaked up the glorious juxtaposition of old against new, rich mixes of colors & patterns, & eclectic cultural blends in architecture and design. I love objects & spaces with patina, which show a history, age, a past. Scars from a past life. I suppose that is why my design esthetic is best described as Eclectic. A modern new space feels balanced to me when there is a pinch of old added to the mix. Embracing high & low, old & new. I don’t usually think of rules when it comes to design & decorating, except I gravitate to minimalism over maximalism.

Inspiration can be found around every corner: colors and textures in nature, places I travel to, fashion, graphics and advertising.

I received a BFA in Interior Design from Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore and have been a practicing Interior Designer for over 30 yrs.
